First Guitar Lesson

It’s probably inevitable that Jake will love music and probably pick up an instrument or two, considering we have an entire room in our house devoted to drums, guitars, keyboards, organs, and recording equipment. Matt and I both want him to do what he loves and if that doesn’t involve music, then we are totally fine with that. But, I have a sneaking suspicion that Jake will be banging away on a real drum kit before he’s two. Because, you see, Jake thinks his dad is the coolest person on the planet, and if his dad likes something, then Jake likes it too. And if Jake notices Matt is really into something, then Jake wants to be right there with him, helping him out. It’s sweeter than words and makes me a little teary-eyed just thinking of that father/son bond.

Look at how Jake studies his dad’s fingers and how they move along the strings.

Then he watches the strumming action.

And then he tries for himself. I’m not sure what chord this is because I choose to be incompetent in all areas of music. I took a few years of piano and have nothing to show for it. I don’t even remember “Chopsticks.” And I’m okay with that. It’s like I always say, “Why pick up an instrument when you can pick up a book?”

That’s the first time I’ve ever actually said that, but whatever.

So, who knows what the future will hold with our little Jakers. He may be writing songs by age 8. Or he may choose to write stories instead. Or as Matt says, he may tell us both to scram and become obsessed with wrestling (Lord, help me.). Whatever he is drawn to, we will support and encourage him and find ways to nurture his talents.

But, just as a precautionary measure, I’m going to start stockpiling those foamy earplugs.

  1. These pictures are precious! He really is so attentive to what Matt is doing. I love that!
